"Smells Like Teen Spirit" almost got its title from a joke Kurt Cobain didn't even understand. A friend scrawled it on his apartment wall as a dig about deodorant and a breakup — Cobain thought it just sounded like a punk rallying cry. Behind the the world read as a call to arms: a producer chasing a vocal take until it cracked, and a riff no one at the label expected to sell.
