Dynamite by BTS - Behind The Song

Everyone swears BTS poured their own pandemic blues into this one. The songwriting credits tell a different story.

Dynamite by BTS: the myth says they wrote it themselves to beat lockdown blues.

Truth starts an ocean away — two songwriters who'd never met the group got a brief from the label: make it feel good.

Zero band members hold a writing credit on this one. Did you know that?

A diary entry? Not quite.

The story that spread fastest: BTS, stuck in lockdown and missing the stage, wrote this to cheer themselves up. The real sequence runs backward. Big Hit commissioned an English-language single first, aiming at the U.S. charts, then handed the brief to songwriters abroad. The uplift came from a label memo, not a diary entry.

Built to feel good, not to confess

Stripped of the pandemic headlines, it's a disco-pop song about getting up and dancing, nothing more specific than that. Fans often read it as the members narrating their own lockdown feelings. But none of the seven wrote a line of it, so the collective voice is a pop convention, not a confession.

Did you know?

  1. Written by UK songwriters David Stewart and Jessica Agombar — the first BTS single without a single member credited as co-writer.
  2. Big Hit's brief, per Agombar's own interviews, was for an upbeat retro-disco song to lift spirits, not a personal lockdown ballad.
  3. Vocals were tracked and swapped digitally between Seoul, London and Los Angeles while pandemic travel bans kept everyone apart.
  4. Canon-refill's check of the songwriters' and BTS's own accounts found no evidence the members wrote a single verse themselves.
  5. Debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (chart dated Sept. 5, 2020), the first chart-topper by an all-South-Korean act.
  6. Nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 63rd Grammy Awards in 2021, BTS's first-ever Grammy nomination.
  7. Certified Platinum in the United States by the RIAA.
  8. Fortnite added a Dynamite-themed dance emote to its Item Shop in September 2020, timed to the single's release.
